Case Study
The Client
A four star and leading edge County Council with a
desire to be “The Greenest County”
The Challenge
The Council had taken the lead in the drive to ensure
that fresh quality foods are provided to schools in an
environmental manner and (where possible) from local
sources. Previously there were a large number of
deliveries to any given location, necessitated by the
separate delivery of frozen food, groceries plus fruit
and vegetables. These separate deliveries are likely
to be very inconvenient for the schools as staff will
need to be available for each delivery. More
importantly, the number of miles driven is excessive
giving rise to a large environmental footprint and
high costs.
The Solution
In addition to considering the practical issues and
truly understanding the hurdles for change, Axios used
a leading vehicle scheduling system to identify the
optimum warehouse location(s), the ideal mix of
vehicles and the best delivery routes.
The Results
A range of options were identified ranging from
training of existing suppliers through to a single set
of deliveries reducing the delivery miles,
environmental footprint and congestion by 60%.
